Annuals, Perennials & Tropicals

In Savannah, we do things a little differently than our northern friends. We’re far enough south and close enough to the coast to enjoy relatively mild winters, letting us landscape and garden nearly all year long.  Of course, we DO still have seasons here, so when the cold puts an end to the warm weather perennials, your yard can still shine with winter annuals.

The question we hear pretty often is ‘what’s the difference between an annual and a perennial?’  Annuals live for just one season in a particular climate and reproduce by seed, whereas perennials come back each year from their rootstock after dying back in the winter.  So why plant annuals twice a year when perennials come back every year?  Careful selection and placement of perennials can give you a low-maintenance landscape, however, many perennials only bloom for a month or so at a time.  To have continuous color, you need to consider bloom timing along with placement.  Include annuals in your plan, and your hard work will be rewarded with a bed of show-stopping color that will last all season long.  Of course these rules aren’t written in stone.  Lantana is a perennial that stays in bloom for months of color.  Some annuals have such borderline temperature preferences for our zone that a mild winter can ensure their survival.
In our region, tropical plants fair well and, like palms, can go a long way in creating a stunning tropical landscape. The more cold hardy tropicals (such as varieties of colocasia, alocasia, philodendron, cannas and gingers) can act as perennials in a normal winter, while some varieties are to be treated as annuals in Savannah (though many plants will regrow even after severe winter damage). Of course if you have the space, you could always containerize borderline tropicals, and overwinter them in a garage. At Herb Creek, we begin receiving new shipments of tropical plants from south Florida in the early spring, and commonly stock them throughout the spring and summer.

In additions to all of our wonderful annuals, perennials and tropicals, we carry an extensive selection of agaves, yuccas, cacti, aloes and other succulents.
